Own a Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 or Lumia 830 and have the latest Lumia Denim update? You’ll find the Lumia Camera app now allows you to make the most of Rich Capture. Here we show you how to use Rich Capture on your Lumia and get the best photos ever.
The updated Lumia Camera app for the Lumia 930, Lumia 1520 and Lumia 830 not only offers fast start-up and capture speeds, but the new technologies tucked away inside will help you take the best photos every time.
For the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930, Lumia Camera comes as part of the Lumia Denim update. The Lumia 830 requires a separate over-the-air update before it can take advantage of the app and features in it.
One of these new photo experiences is Rich Capture, which gives you access to HDR (High Dynamic Range), Dynamic Flash and Dynamic Exposure, allowing you to shoot first and edit the look of the shot after.
You’ll find that Dynamic Flash allows you to take photos with and without flash and decide afterwards how you want the shot to look by altering the amount of flash used in the shot. Dynamic Exposure is used in low-light settings when you have the Flash switched off. It works by automatically capturing a short and long exposure image, so you can dynamically blend the two exposures afterwards.
Finally, there is HDR (High Dynamic Range), which automatically kicks in when you are taking images in high-contrast scenes when there is a lot of light and contrasting dark areas. HDR captures all the details, so you can get a more dramatic effect by blending multiple images with different exposure levels.
How to use Rich CaptureOpen the Lumia Camera app and set the Flash to Flash Auto mode and tap the ‘Magic Wand’ icon that sits next to the Flash – this is the Rich Capture feature.

With the camera in Rich Capture mode you’ll find that it adapts to the settings you are in and captures multiple images with HDR, dynamic flash and exposure settings incorporated, so you can edit the shot.
To do this, select the image you’ve taken from the Camera Roll and tap the image anywhere and tap the “Edit Rich Capture” icon. You’ll find yourself on a new screen with a range of options on offer all depending on the scene the image was taken in. You can choose one of the options on offer, or use the Customise icon to alter the settings manually.
This is done using a slider control which alters the image by increments. Once you have the image you want simply save and share – it’s that easy!
